Occupied at various times by the Portugese, the Dutch and the British, the collonial influence is visible in much of the architecture in teh towns and cities.  Since leaf blight wiped out the coffee industry in 1870, tea has become the predominant export industry and Sri Lanka is now the 2nd biggest exporter of tea in the world.
